Rainforest Connection

San Francisco, California

Rainforest Connection has been testing a new way of monitoring illegal logging activity in forests in Asia, Africa and South America. It transforms recycled cellphones into autonomous, solar powered listening devices that can monitor and pinpoint chainsaw activity at great distance and monitor illegal logging as it occurs. By connecting the devices to the cloud, real time monitoring of deforestation can be done from anywhere in the world. The listening devices can help indigenous tribes protect their forest from illegal logging, and generate carbon credits that they can invest in health and education programs for their communities.
